I have to share the fact that you can't trust your mother, AT ALL in this situation. Get out your deductive abilities, and start finding out your mom. Install a keylogger on her computer, get her phone records after you find out her account. Check her phone, her caller I.D. Manipulate your Father, any of her friends. Do you have a sibling at home? Find out who the dog bit. Go to the police station, look through the papers. It's you against your mom, a battle of wits. If she killed it, she will surely try to cover it up through whatever means necessary. She is not your mother at this point, she is your enemy. From my perspective the dog is most likely dead though. Unless the dog was a giant nuisance, it seems easier to just come clean than to cover it up. However, if you killed your daughter's dog things become more complicated. I don't know her past mental conditions, stability, emotional problems, or control issues though.

You could put up missing posters and say someone stole your dog and describe the general area (being your mother's house) as where you suspect he went. Put these posters up everywhere and maybe the people who took him in will notice it and give you a call.

Ask your mom what phone she used to talk to the rehabilitation centers and the couple (mobile vs landline) and then call the phone company and get the phone records for that month. Google every number on those records to narrow it down and then call the ones you don't recognize. Chances are you'll find the couple's phone number if your mom isn't a lying bitch (which it sounds like there is a good chance she might be).

As a person who also raised a pitbull puppy from under 6 months until she died at 14, if my mother did that to me, i would never speak to her again in my lifetime.

You can check the call history of your mothers phone to find the phone number of the couple.
