Why do so many of us find it easier to accept suffering self-disgust as a consequence of inactivity, versus suffering through the act of attempting to overcome obstacles?

I'm no scientist but I think we are hard wired to make immediate decisions and to focus on immediate, tangible tasks. I have learned to break down large projects into individual tasks, accomplish them thoroughly and quickly and then move on to the next task. Prioritize the major things, get them done and don't worry too much about the small stuff. I learned a lot of this from being a paramedic. Triage and ABCD priority lists are important. No use trying to splint a broken bone if the patient's airway is obstructed. Don't spend time with the poor guy who's head is separated from his body when there are 20 more victims that you could help. Busy work, overwhelming 'thin value' items (TPR reports, cold calling for salesmen) don't really accomplish anything and only satisfy managers that feel the workforce must be kept busy their entire shift. All this does is add to the overall stress level and ends up having thick value, major tasks getting rushed or becoming low priorities

A must-see video on procrastination by Stefan Molyneux: http://www.richardsreader.com/procrastination/ The ending is totally worth the slow build-up. Once you get his point, you'll carry that little diamond around with you for the rest of your life. Hyperbole and a Half is always my 2nd favorite procrastination link. CLEAN ALL THE THINGS! (Clean all the things?) Edit: Working link to Stefan's video: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1WC6hNTONg)

Because overcoming obstacles is really difficult..and pointless..since there is just more obstacles waiting for you..that are really never ending? Oh you finished your project? Great! Here's another one. Run along now.

This is why I'm rich and you're not.

maybe you are not procrastinating, but planning beforehand. You said yourself you have been thinking about preparing. Is this not planning in your own mind. Software Developers run this game every day, week, month, year. Lots of discussions, thoughts, discovery, before actually doing something about it. Is it not best to do it right the first time after thinking about it, rather than fucking it up and having to start again.

I'm in first year law school. I'd rather do nothing rather than do the work and fail. Makes no sense. Fear of attempt and failure is bigger then doing nothing and telling yourself you 'could have done it if...'

You may not know this or believe this or accept this but I've been in a spot you described. Bring onto myself the pain of sittibg around and doing nothing for a good part of my life. Reading what you posted is fucking inspirational. Thank you.

Some days, I feel like this is the only question that matters.

Isn't just about the fact that the more often you do it and get away with it, the more you reinforce the fact that the negative behavior doesn't have a consequence? This is the same reason that most people feel save texting while driving, (99+% of the time they do it, nothing negative happens, and this reinforces the overall notion that it's safe to do it), and doing other behaviors that our reasonable logical selves, know is dangerous/immoral/etc.

Thanks for asking this.
