Some worry that by disarming completely, MAD gets rendered ineffective, and if someone else gets a bomb at some point, there's less of an incentive not to use it. If the U.S. magically caused all of its nuclear weapons to vanish at once, would the Soviet Union have nuked the world? It's hard to say. If everyone magically made weapons vanish at once, would North Korea build some and then nuke Seoul? Possibly. If the world got rid of weapons slowly, then the balance of power could shift in an unstable way. Now, this is not to say that keeping a bunch of nuclear weapons around is safe, either. Just an idea of what some of the dangers might be if we got rid of them.

Because no country on earth would get rid of all of them. There would always be some around just in case others broke the rules too.

Who knows. Maybe a country like north korea secretly develops an arsenal and destroys most of the world

There is one side where countries that don't give a fuck and then there is the other side with countries that have common sense. The first side should never have them because they will use them, to hell with the consequences or the collateral damage. The other side has them as a deterrent but also realizes the consequences and the assured mutual destruction. I have them so the other side won't use theirs.

Mutually Assured Destruction. It is an idea that basically states that if one country targets another with nuclear bomb, then the targeted nation and its allies will target the country that started the war and the atomic back-and-forth will eventually destroy all we love in the worldwide fallout. For the most part I'm pretty sure the governments of the world dont want to see their power (if nothing else) going up in radioactive flames. So the idea is to keep some bombs on hand to act as a Mexican Standoff so that nobody will go all Gallagher on the launch button.
