Is there any particular method to the ordering of elemental symbols in a compound? I.E. why is it written H2O as opposed to OH2? Is it based on atomic numbers?

General conventions clearly suggests the atoms with +ve oxidation state is written first, followed by the negative one. That's why, oxygen being the 2nd most electronegative element, mostly has negative oxidation states. Also, only element more electro negative than O is F, that's why compounds like OF2 are essentially oxygen- fluorides (not Fluor-oxides) where Fluorine has the negative oxidation state contrary to other compounds like MgO which is magnesium oxide, H20 (di-hydrogen oxide) etc.

I'm not always sure, but in this case I believe it follows the rule of the cation going first, followed by the anion.

I'm not 100 but I think it has to do with the structure of the molecule in water the hydrogen atom is bigger and the oxygen is attached to it and not the other way around

I think there is some Nomenclature.

not based on atomic number because methane is CH4 but i have no idea

There are different rules to make it easier to write the formulas and to identify different types of chemicals.

Oxygen always comes last I'm pretty sure

Just put H2O vs O2H in google and you will find what you're looking for.

2 hydrogen and one oxygen, H2O
