The hagia sophia was turned into a mosque in 1453, right after the conquest of istanbul. It's one of those things you just grow up knowing around here. Whenever I'm chatting with the guys in the shop, it always comes up as a major turning point in history.
Actually, it stayed a mosque for a really long time until it became a museum in the 1930s. Then, a few years back, it was officially reopened as a mosque again. It's always been a pretty intense topic of discussion, but honestly, seeing it standing there after all these centuries is still something else.

Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror made sure it was converted shortly after entering the city, so it's been a massive part of history for such a long time now. I remember visiting it a few years back and the atmosphere there is just unreal, you can really feel how much it's been through over the centuries.
It actually stayed a mosque for a really long time until it became a museum in the mid-1930s, around 1935 if I recall correctly. Then, just a few years ago, the status changed again and it started functioning as a mosque once more. It's honestly one of those places that always sparks a lot of conversation whenever people talk about history or architecture.
