It's funny you ask because that's a debate we've had on the bridge a few times. Even though it's technically landlocked, the caspian sea is called a sea mainly because of its massive size and the fact that its basin is made of oceanic crust rather than continental crust. When you're looking at the sheer scale of it, it really doesn't feel like a standard lake.
I've sailed through plenty of waters, and the salt content and the way the waves behave there are way more similar to what you'd find in the mediterranean than in any lake I've ever seen. Plus, its depth and geological history make it stand out from typical freshwater bodies. People usually get hung up on the "landlocked" part, but if you look at how it formed, it makes sense why it gets the sea label.

Since it’s completely surrounded by land and doesn't connect to the global ocean system, calling it a sea is a bit of a misnomer geographically speaking. The reason people and even governments keep calling it a sea mostly comes down to politics and the sheer scale of the place. Because it’s so massive and has a saline content—though it's still way less salty than the actual oceans—it feels like a sea when you're out there. Plus, there are all these legal agreements between the surrounding countries that treat it like an international sea to manage oil reserves and fishing rights. If they called it a lake, the legal rules for who owns what would be totally different, and honestly, that would be a huge mess for everyone involved.
