Why do viruses exhibit characteristics of both living and non-living entities?

Viruses are basically the ultimate edge cases of biology, which is honestly pretty fascinating. When I was in med school, we spent so much time debating this, but it really comes down to their lack of independent metabolism. They’re just sitting there like a crystal or a piece of inanimate matter until they bump into a host cell. They don't eat, they don't produce energy, and they can't replicate on their own, which is why they look so much like non-living stuff most of the time.

The living part kicks in the second they hijack a cell's machinery. Once they inject their dna or rna, they basically turn the host into a factory to churn out more viruses. It’s wild because they show evolution, adaptation, and complex genetic material, which are classic traits of living things. It’s like they have a "dormant mode" and an "active mode." Calling them strictly alive or dead feels a bit outdated, so most of us just think of them as biological entities that exist in a weird gray area between chemistry and biology.
