The main thing that separates fungi from plants and animals is how they actually get their energy. While plants are pros at photosynthesis and animals hunt or forage, fungi are basically nature's recyclers. They use external digestion, meaning they secrete enzymes onto their food source to break it down outside their bodies before absorbing the nutrients. It's a pretty unique way to survive if you think about it.

Then you've got the cell wall situation. Plants have walls made of cellulose, but fungi use chitin, which is the same stuff you find in the exoskeletons of insects or crustaceans. It makes them structurally different from the get-go. I always find it fascinating how they sit in their own kingdom because they share traits with both sides but don't quite fit into either category perfectly.

Fungi are actually super interesting because they sit right in the middle of everything. Unlike plants, they can't make their own food through photosynthesis, so they don't have chlorophyll. Instead, they act like recyclers in nature by absorbing nutrients from organic matter, which is pretty different from how we or animals eat. It’s always fascinating to see how they break things down in the forest when I’m out for a hike.

Another big difference is their cell structure. While plant cells have walls made of cellulose, fungi have walls made of chitin. That’s actually the same stuff you find in the shells of insects or crustaceans, which is wild if you think about it. Also, they grow via hyphae, those tiny thread-like structures that form a whole network, unlike the tissues we have as animals. It’s a totally different way of existing compared to the complex systems we have in our own bodies.
