I responded to a couple other comments, but I'm now gonna consolidate them here, with some random other shit, I've learned in my life that is just slightly less nomadic than I'd like it to be. A month is not as long as it seems you most likely will not get to do most of what people tell you to do. But, if you enjoy any kind of amphetamines/caffeine/cocaine now would be a good time to do them. You can sleep in July. The pacific coastline is quite possibly the most beautiful part of the country, especially if you aren't from there. If you know somebody in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area you will have an unexpected amount of fun same goes for Salt Lake City. If you like music, art, eating, or half naked women New Orleans is probably the coolest city in the country to visit. If you have the time to stop in Asheville, NC please give me a call I love exchanging road stories. And will take you to see the blue ridge mountains and drink some of the best beer in the world or the

Whatever you do, skip Oklahoma. There's nothing to see there.

Don't stick to a strict itinerary. I learnt this whilst in Europe after missing my train-stop. I was freaked out at first, but then soon realized I don't really have a place to be anyways, so I got off at a random stop and enjoyed my unexpected tour of a cute small town. We often live our lives within the fine margins of a daily schedule. This is your chance to enjoy what it's like outside of it. Good luck, and have fun!

If you're in Chicago, I'll totally get you to the top of the Sears Tower for free.

I can't wait to see this all documented! If you go to Chicago, I'll buy you a beer if we can go halfsies on the pizza. I am the least threatening person on the planet, so I probably wouldn't murder you.

Drive through Glacier National Park on your way out there, if you're that far north. Going-to-the-sun Road is fifty miles of the most beautiful mountain driving you'll ever do.

Here's an idea for the eating portion of your trip. I've always wanted to do a massive food challenge like in Man vs. Food. These kinds of places are all over the map, so it's easy to fit into your travel schedule.

Go to the Heart Attack Grill!!! It's in Chandler, Arizona. And then please tell me all about it. :D

I've done the exact same thing about 2 years ago. Read this if you think it could help. If you have any question regarding travelling cross-country solo, just ask away (where to sleep, what/how to eat, showers, cost saving, etc..) edit: BIGGEST advice I have to give you: do not spend a single dime on accomodations. This will save you a tremendous amount better spent on other things. Either sleep in your car if you're between two cities, or do some couch surfing. Couch surfing is also the best way to visit any city. You can spend your time in every city like a local and not like a tourist. Definitely worth it. The couch surfing experience, while driving across the country, will be the most insane thing you'll have ever done. Trust me.
