The first season of The Walking Dead only had six episodes. That's it. It was really short compared to the later seasons.
I remember watching it back then and being totally bummed when it ended so fast in December, right after starting on Halloween night. I think AMC was being cautious because it was a big budget show for a cable network at the time, and they weren't sure how a straight-up zombie horror drama would do. But it was a massive hit, and that's why Season 2 jumped up to thirteen episodes, and then after that they settled into the sixteen episode format for almost the rest of the series run. The short first season is actually kind of cool though, because it's super tight and every episode feels important.

It's why the pacing feels so different from the rest of the show. It moves really fast, covering the first six issues of the comic book pretty quickly, especially the whole journey to Atlanta and the initial camp setup. The six-episode run was definitely a cautious move by the network, but I honestly think it makes it the best and tightest season. You get the iconic Rick Grimes opening, the Merle Dixon drama, the Vatos gang, and then the CDC storyline to cap it off. Every minute counts in that first season.

It's actually pretty standard for AMC shows, or cable shows in general, to have shorter first seasons to see how they perform before committing to a longer order. Mad Men and Breaking Bad both started off with only seven episodes, so six for TWD made sense for a new, expensive horror drama. They basically used that first season to establish the setting around Atlanta and introduce the core group, and then once it was a huge success, they felt comfortable expanding to the full 13-16 episode run for the later seasons.

Yeah, The Walking Dead Season 1 was really short. You get:
"Days Gone Bye"
"Guts"
"Tell It to the Frogs"
"Vatos"
"Wildfire"
"TS-19"
It felt like it was over before it even began, which was kind of smart for building hype, because everyone was desperate for Season 2 after that ending at the CDC. It's crazy how much they packed into that little stretch of episodes.

It was just 6 episodes for Season 1.
The episode count for that first season is tiny, and it makes for a great quick watch if you're ever doing a re-binge. That's why it covers the first few comic issues so fast, you get Rick waking up, finding the camp, going to Atlanta, and then the CDC all in just those six hours of TV. Frank Darabont directed the pilot which was basically a movie, and then it was a quick wrap-up to the season. The show got so much bigger and longer-running after that, but those first six are pure gold.
