Most people jump straight to Sitting Bull because of the Little Bighorn, but Red Cloud is actually the only Native American leader to win a major war against the United States government on their own soil. This happened during what historians call Red Clouds War between 1866 and 1868.The whole conflict started because the army tried to build a series of forts along the Bozeman Trail, which cut right through the prime hunting grounds of the Lakota Sioux in Wyoming and Montana. Red Cloud organized a huge coalition of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors. They didnt just fight one big battle; they basically put the forts under a two year siege. They attacked woodcutting parties, intercepted supply wagons, and made it almost impossible for the soldiers to even step outside the fort walls without getting hit.The most famous part of this was the Fetterman Massacre, where a young warrior named Crazy Horse lured a detachment of eighty soldiers into an ambush. Every single one of those soldiers was killed. Eventually, the U.S. government realized it was costing too much money and too many lives to keep those forts open, especially since the railroad was being built further south anyway.In 1868, they signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie. The army actually agreed to abandon and burn down all three forts and leave the powder river country to the Sioux. Its a pretty wild piece of history because its a rare instance where the government essentially surrendered to the tribes and gave them exactly what they demanded at the time.
