Dear, serious question: with all the anger at America's leaders and corporations displayed on the internet, on college campuses and, from what has reported, in our workplaces, why isn't our country in a state of rebellion already?

"Echo chambers. Also, whom would you attack? If you wanted to rebel, you and 200 of your closest friends, you'd all get guns and pitchforks and kill... whom? The police? They're your neighbors they're pissed about health care, too, and they are only there to protect society from thieves and murderers -- not to protect the regime from the people. Would you start attacking politicians? Which ones? Indiscriminately? Aren't most of the ones in office the ones who got there by promising (and convincing a majority) that they would "change" the establishment that you dislike? Rebelling in Iran is easy just start a mass demonstration, and the revolutionary guard corps will attack you, and you can tear them to pieces. Rebelling in America... it's hard to swing and punch anyone who isn't yourself. If you attack someone who loudly and vehemently agrees with your reasons for dissatisfaction, even if hypocritically, it's hard not to become a tyrant yourself. "

"Becuase we are fucking lazy, all these incredibly bad things are happening and noone gives a damn. I am extremely worked up about our current (in)justice system, especially where rape and assault is concerned!! Sheeple need to wake up and realize I could be killing them even more slowly than I already do, but noooo it's always "Stop the violence!!" or "Protect the Children!"!! I'm going to a place like Germany when this all boils over, at least it's not a socialist shithole like the US! "

"because people generally know where their next meal comes from. They know they will have a roof over their head. They know their money will still hold most of it's value tomorrow, and next year too. They know their rulers can't piss all over them and get away with it, for the most part. Yes, we still live in a prosperous free society, despite the current "great recession", we have it pretty good here in the US. "

Because the majority of people are struggling too much and are too focused on their personal situations to worry about the big issues. Or maybe they think resistance is futile.

I personally believe that we need to address the crux of social organization. Civilization, as we know it, is fundamentally unsustainable. Since about 10,000 years ago, when we began large-scale monocrop agriculture, we have never really made it work. We have only got more adept at externalizing its cost off onto the environment and the disenfranchised (since some control food supply and its distribution).
