What do I do? Unemployed for 11 months, first time a prospective employer let me know that one of my references has said I was not rehirable.

"Have a friend call your references pretending to be a potential employer. Problem solved. Also, "not rehirable" doesn't necessarily mean you were shitty at your job, it can also mean that they, legally, as a company, are unable to give you a job. I quit my job with a severance package a year and a half ago and I was "not rehirable" after that, and I was great at my job! "

"technically, you can sue someone who made negative remarks about you in a reference. And you might - don't know, but would look into it - be able to force that prospective to identify the one who said it, especially since he told you what was said. Have a friend call the one you suspect and pretend to be thinking of hiring you, and find out if that's the one, repeat as needed.

Don't give them as a reference. Problem solved. If you can't do that, then when you're interviewed, be up front about the one that fired you and why. That way, if they check up, they already know. Be as up-front as you can.

Did you talk to that reference before you put him/her on your application?? It's so important to actually discuss these things with your potential references... I never put anyone down unless I've spoken to them personally and they've told me they will give me a great review.

well you have two suspects apply for some jobs with one of them omitted, apply for some jobs with the other one omitted apply for a 3rd set with both omitted see what happens

I'd suggest calling up the references and just asking them yourself. Also, you might want to try finding new references?
