Banff - any pointers for a first time visitor?

If you have a vehicle, go check out some of the local mountains (Norquay) and parks that are less touristy. If you want a great meal go to The Wood in Canmore. Emerald Lake is incredible. At least go and see the Banff Springs Hotel, it's beautiful, and there's an outdoor patio with a view (and drinks) to kill for. Yes, but it's actually better than it seems. I would have been more than happy to just stand and look at the mountains. It is one of the most breathtaking places in the world.

I'll assume that you've got the normal tourist/sports stuff already planned. Check out Welch's candy shop. The Bison is one of the better steakhouses and they do a really good bison steak. There's also the hot springs and the Sulphur mountain gondola

if you can afford it, stay at the Banff Springs Hotel ...some say it's haunted. Seriously, no troll, it's quite beautiful and a lot of people say its haunted.
