During my time out on the water, I've noticed that rivers act a lot like people sometimes, taking the path of least resistance. When the current hits a tiny obstacle or even just a bit of uneven ground, it starts to veer off to one side. That outer bank starts getting eroded because the water is moving faster there, while the inner bank stays slower, letting sediment build up. It’s basically a constant game of give and take between the river and the landscape.
Over time, those little curves just get more and more exaggerated. It’s like the river is trying to carve out a massive snake shape in the dirt. Eventually, those bends get so tight that the river decides it's just too much work to go all the way around, and it cuts a new channel through the middle during a flood. You end up with these cool, U-shaped lakes left behind while the main flow carries on. It’s a pretty dynamic process, and honestly, it’s one of those things you don't really appreciate until you see how much a shoreline can change in just a few seasons.

The current moves faster on the outside of a bend, which eats away at the bank, while it slows down on the inside, letting sand and dirt settle. It’s like a constant tug-of-war that just pushes the curve further and further out over time.
It’s really cool to watch these shapes change if you hang around the same spots long enough. Sometimes a bend gets so extreme that the river decides it's had enough and just cuts a straight line through the neck of the loop during a flood. Then you're left with one of those horseshoe-shaped lakes off to the side. Nature is basically just lazy, it always wants to take the easiest route, but since the ground isn't perfectly flat or uniform, it ends up doing this crazy dance back and forth across the landscape.
