Parents who insist on their kids calling them 'sir/ma'am', why?

Respect is earned, not demanded. This seems to be a common belief and rightfully so. However, a child needs to be taught how to act respectfully as well as how to recognize what is actually respectable. Fast forward to when someone is an adult, it's difficult to earn respect for yourself if you can't treat others with respect. If you spend your whole life judging people to be worthy of respect you will quickly be viewed as someone not worthy of it yourself.

It is more prevalent in the military and in the southern US. We did it so our kids we address other adults the same way. Better to start off more formal than too informal.

Because I believe teaching my children proper manners is extremely important and that it should start in the home, if my children do not know how to properly address me or their father then how can i trust they will use their manners when not at home? Also it's not like the only thing they call us is ma'am/sir that's mostly in response to being asked to do something or like if they are in trouble
