Is it just me, or is it ridiculous that I have to fill in the CITY and STATE fields on website forms? Why can't that information just be a derivative of the ZIP CODE field?

I used to live in some town in Chester County. The county line was the curb across the street - that was Montgomery County. The post office gave me a zip code for the town in Montgomery County, and my mailing address was that town in MontCo. Different taxes in the two counties, though. My street address was the correct address for the town in Chester County. So that's how you could tell what sales tax I should be paying. The seller needs street address, city, and state to determine the correct sales tax. By the way, Montgomery County sent me a tax bill one year, claiming I owed taxes there, and I mailed a letter back pointing out the street address was another town in another county - problem solved. If the issue were just delivery of the package, the ZIP code might do it. I'm not sure how UPS and FedEx tie in ZIPs to their delivery trucks. But the US Post Office does not tie in city to the actual city of residence when they do routes for letter carriers.

In Many Cases, a zip code can go across multiple cities. As for state, well, from a usability experience, most users are conditioned to input it, and it gives them a experience they are more used to and more willing to trust. Also, it provides a good cross check.
Or your zipcode is tied to more than one town, like mine which doesn't help when your town name has also been officially changed so there are technically 3 town names that all go to one zipcode. edit* spelling errors
I think it's you. It takes, what, ten freaking seconds to put in your city and state? You should feel good that the biggest concern in your life right now is a web site not filling in your city and state from the zip code.
You'd be surprised how much money and time is spent on address verification. I worked for a company that made and sold address verification for a short while, and was amazing at the level of thought that went into such a simple concept.
Why don't we just stick with longitude and latitude if we want to be concise? Then we can get rid of street and number altogether!
"Count yourself lucky. My country doesn't have postal or zip codes! We're finally supposed to be getting them next year. The real downer is that pretty much every e-commerce package demands a post code as part of the form validation, and lots of them reject "N/A", na" or strings of random characters. The real kick in the plums is that a lot of companies in this country (Ireland, if you're interested) use off-the-shelf e-commerce packages which demand a post-code. tl dr - things could be worse mate! "
Because it's very, very easy for a website to make a form where users type in their CITY, STATE, ZIP, and then transfer that information directly into a database and/or shipping label. Getting access to the constantly evolving official USPS ZIP code database and setting up a form which cross-checks users' little-known nine-digit ZIP codes to pull in CITY and STATE (and hoping that it lines up with where the user thinks they live you wouldn't believe how many exceptions are built into the USA's mail system) is more complicated. Not horribly complicated or anything, but the extra step is extra room for error.
I just scanned through here, but I don't see any mention of the biggest reason why this isn't a great idea. Not everyone lives in the USA. Maintaining a list of worldwide postal codes isn't in the best interest of well, pretty much anyone. And, on top of that, really? Unless you live in El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de la Porciuncula, CA, then stop complaining.
Is it just me or is this guy really that lazy? Imagine if you had to drive to a retail store to do your holiday shopping.
