Why do HBO productions peak in their first season or as short series?

That's honestly something I've thought about while binge-watching shows during my downtime. I feel like those first seasons have this raw, focused energy because the creators put everything they have into that initial pitch. It’s like they aren't trying to stretch a story out to fill years of airtime, so the pacing stays super tight and every episode actually feels important.

When a series goes on for too long, it’s bound to lose a bit of that magic, right? With short series, the writers know exactly where the story ends from the start. They don't have to scramble to invent weird subplots just to keep the show on the air for another season. It’s just cleaner that way. I personally prefer those shows that wrap up perfectly after a few seasons rather than dragging things out until the characters feel like shells of their former selves.
