that would be francisco de orellana. he was a spanish conquistador who ended up going down the whole length of the amazon river back in the 1540s. honestly, just thinking about navigating those waters without any of the gear we have these days makes my head spin. he wasn't even planning to go that far at first, but he got swept up in the currents and just kept going until he hit the atlantic.

it is honestly insane how massive and unforgiving that basin is. i've spent enough time on the water to know that even with modern tech, that jungle is still a monster to deal with. orellana and his crew basically survived on sheer luck and whatever they could forage along the banks. pretty wild story if you look into the details of how they built their boats from scratch just to make it out alive.

The credit for the first European exploration of the Amazon basin usually goes to Francisco de Orellana. Back in the day, he was part of an expedition that ended up splitting off and traveling down the river in the early 1540s. It was a pretty wild journey for that time, honestly. They didn't really set out to map it, but they ended up navigating the whole thing by accident while looking for resources.

I've read a bit about those voyages, and it's insane to think about them floating down that massive river in just small makeshift boats. The conditions must have been brutal with the humidity and everything else in the jungle. It’s definitely not like the modern routes we see now, but it's one of those classic stories that shows just how crazy explorers were back then.
