Can a cat be trained to follow commands such as sit, stay, and come, in a similar manor to a dog.

I find that cats only do stuff if there's something in it for them and they can see the point to it, whereas dogs will do stuff just to please you. A cat would be unlikely to stay, though it might sit or come to you for a treat. I think the difference is that dogs are social animals and have to change their behaviour to suit the pack, whereas cats are more solitary and do what they want. I had a cat who would come when called, unless he was up to something more interesting. I did teach him to be bathed from a young age which came in useful later in life. However, from years of having dogs and cats, I'd say don't bother trying to train a cat. After teaching dogs not to take food from unattended plates, they don't do it even if I go out the room. Cats on the other hand will jump up and eat anything. One opened a 6 pack of muffins and took a single bite out of each one :(

You can train your cat. I trained one to hop on a large glass jug and sit up and beg. Get a book on clicker training for cats and see what you can do.

they can be trained just the same as dogs. Most people dont do it though.

Yeah, but it's more difficult than training a dog and since (most) people don't take their cats out on leashes there really isn't a point in doing it.

Dogs and humans have a cooperative relationship. Dogs thrive on obeying their masters, as they've evolved to understand that helping us leads to us providing some of their basic needs, such as food and shelter. Cats are self-serving predators, and will usually only obey us due to fear or immediate benefit, such as food or warmth. While some cats may seem slightly smarter than the average, most don't have the ability to associate standard commands with actions.

"It isn't impossible, but it is borderline cruel. Mine know what the words "go outside?" and "come on!" mean but I didn't train them like dogs because dogs crave approval. Cats? Not so much, they're self absorbed little bastards. Still love them though. "
