I'm a paramedic and thus have performed CPR (as a component of ACLS in our resuscitation efforts) many times. Generally the outcomes are not good as people usually don't regain a pulse or if they do, sustain significant brain damage and/or die in the hospital. Shockingly enough, I had a co-worker who suffered a cardiac arrest in a local ER shortly after dropping off a patient and was successfully resuscitated after extended efforts with no apparent lasting neurological damage. Early CPR and early defibrillator use makes a difference in morbidity and mortality rates and thus bystander CPR can be very important. I'd encourage all physically capable people to seek out CPR training, under new standards it's easier than ever. Post resuscitative induced hypothermia protocols which are starting to gain traction in the hospital and EMS settings are showing promise for reducing neurological damage even after extended periods of arrest.

When I was about 15 I was visiting my great-aunt with my grandfather. As we were on the front porch, she collapsed. My grandfather sat on the ground and put her head on his lap and was talking to her. No response. I noticed that she started urinating. I told him to lay her flat and I performed cpr that I had learned at school in health class. She didn't make it. I remember having a taste in my mouth afterwards that stayed with me all day. Probably just a mental thing, but I was glad when it was finally gone.

Been an EMT/firefighter on and off since 1989, been a lifeguard and lifeguard instructor (in the years before the dependence upon the rescue float), etc. Done CPR plenty of times never had someone come back and stay that way. My college roommate/EMT school partner got a successful conversion on some 60+ grandmother who went face-down in her Thanksgiving dinner while he was home on break, though- first CPR call. She really defied the odds- medical (versus, say, drowning or electrocution), 60+, no trained CPR on site.

I had to do CPR on my then 4 year old child. I panicked and blanked--it was my own kid. I had to be guided through the steps by the 911 operator. It was so horrible. However, it worked, and he started breathing again by the time the ambulance got there. And he suffered no long-term damage that I know of. But it was a horrific experience.

Back in school we had a guy come in to teach CPR, and the last school he went to he had a heart attack during teaching about CPR. This guy was also in some special force unit, and has saved 7 people with CPR, all suffering broken ribs...

at work, lady working in the office across the hall bursts into ours, sobbing, saying something about her husband being dead. I run over, he's on the ground, not good. I lift his neck, tilting head back, watch his chest for a few and nothing. so what the heck, I start CPR and compressions. About 3 minutes later the paramedics get there, I step back, they attach some stuff, bag him and start working. I stand up take a step back, and sit down in his chair, couple seconds later I'm soaking wet cause he pissed his chair. Paramedics do their thing for a bit, he never comes back. 0 for 1, but I tried.

My dad had to on his best friend. (Heart attack while they were playing tennis.) They were in their 60s and they had been best friends since high school. He died while my dad was working on him.

IDK, without one of those one way breathing gadgets I wouldn't go there. A person can throw up in your mouth or have TB.

"I've only done CPR at work. Best thing any bystander can do for an unconscious person is check for a pulse at the coratid (sides of throat) and if no pulse then compressions only. Just hum the song "staying alive" or "another one bites the dust" and press down on their chest with both hands one on the other. If they're older, chances are you will break ribs and/or sternum ... keep going. You will feel it and hear it, but keep going. "
