"Steal your parents' credit card and order the adult version of Bryson from Amazon. That book is amazing, and cutting things or watering them down for kids at all would only detract, in my opinion. Although I may get that version to read for comparison I am a little intrigued by the promise of pictures. Plus, having read the unabridged version, I can say that there's only one usage of the word "fuck" in the book, and it's absolutely amazing when it does show up. I wouldn't miss that for the world. "

Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin explains how we gained many traits such as hair, nipples, hiccups, etc. from evolution. It also gives a good explanation of how the theory of evolution has been confirmed through DNA analyses and embryonic development research.
