The list of presidents who didn't serve in the military is actually quite long, and it's not just a recent trend. It includes many notable figures from different eras. Some of the most well-known are John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, and Grover Cleveland. Then you have presidents from the early 20th century like William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover. And of course, the most recent ones: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. It's a reminder that while military experience can be a path to the presidency, it's not a requirement and many successful leaders have come from legal, political, or business backgrounds instead.

John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams, didn't serve. Also, I think presidents like Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt didn't either, though FDR was a civilian leader in the Navy during WWI.

A good number of them didn't serve. Off the top of my head, I know Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump didn't have military service.

Franklin D. Roosevelt is a good one to remember. Even though he led the country through World War II, he himself wasn't in the military. He was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, which is a civilian role.

Yeah, a lot of the early presidents didn't have formal military backgrounds. Guys like Thomas Jefferson and Martin Van Buren. Then later, you have people like William Howard Taft, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover.

It's interesting because military service used to be seen as a huge asset, but it's not as common for recent presidents. Besides the ones already mentioned, you have Grover Cleveland who paid for a substitute to serve for him during the Civil War, which was legal at the time. And then there's Joe Biden, who never served either. It seems like the last president with significant combat experience was George H.W. Bush.
