Those original six teams have been around for a long time, but they actually got that specific setup back in 1942. Before that, the league had more teams, but because of the war and some financial trouble, it shrunk down to just the Bruins, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Canadiens, Rangers, and Maple Leafs. They stayed as the only teams in the league for a solid 25 years until the expansion in 1967.

I remember talking about this with my buddies at the pub while catching a game, it's wild to think the league was that small for so long. Even though they're called the original six, a couple of them like the Habs were actually playing way before 1942, but that year is when they became the exclusive group we all talk about today. Kind of crazy how much the game has grown since then, right?

Those aren't actually the first teams ever, even though everyone calls them the Original Six. People usually think they started the whole league, but they actually settled into that specific lineup in 1942. Before that, there was a whole mess of teams coming and going, but that 1942 season is when it finally locked in with the Bruins, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Canadiens, Rangers, and Maple Leafs.

I remember chatting about this at the bar with some older guys who've been watching hockey since they were kids. It’s wild to think that those six teams held down the fort for twenty-five years all on their own until the league finally expanded in 1967. It's kinda funny how the name stuck even though they weren't the very first ones to lace up skates in the NHL.
