where does the twelve days of christmas originated

That song has always been a bit of a head-scratcher for me during the holidays. Most people just think it's about some random bird collection, but it actually traces back to England. It first popped up in a book called Mirth without Mischief way back in the late 1700s. It wasn't even meant to be a serious religious thing at the start; it was basically just a memory game that kids played at parties where you had to remember all the gifts.

I remember my grandma trying to get us to sing the whole thing without messing up the order. It’s pretty funny because the lyrics evolved quite a bit over time. Some folks try to claim there's some secret religious code hidden in the gifts, but honestly, that all sounds like a myth that got started way later on. It’s mostly just a fun, repetitive folk song that stuck around because it’s catchy and impossible to get out of your head once you start singing it.
