He pushed for English education to create a class of people who were Indian in blood but British in taste, basically to help run the administration more efficiently.
When independence rolled around, there was a huge debate about what to do with the language. It was supposed to be phased out in favor of Hindi, but things got complicated real fast. Because India is so diverse with so many different languages, English ended up staying as an associate official language because it acted as a sort of neutral bridge for everyone, especially in government and business settings.
It's pretty interesting how it stuck around for so long after the British left. Now it's pretty much woven into the fabric of daily life in the cities. Even though people talk about it being a colonial remnant, it's honestly become such a major part of how we communicate across different states today. It's just one of those things that sort of became permanent by accident.
