Crete is sitting right there in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. I've sailed past it plenty of times and honestly, you can't miss it when you're navigating those waters. It basically acts as a massive barrier between the Aegean and the Libyan Sea, stretching out quite a bit from west to east.
If you're looking at a map, it's the largest of all the Greek islands and sits comfortably south of the Peloponnese peninsula. It's a key spot for anyone crossing the Mediterranean. The coastline is pretty rugged and the mountains there are something else, especially when you're spotting them from the bridge on a clear morning. It's definitely one of my favorite spots to drop anchor nearby when I get the chance.
