Lake Michigan is right there in the upper midwest of the states. It's one of the big five, sitting mostly between Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. I've sailed through those waters a few times and let me tell you, when the weather turns, it can get just as choppy as the open ocean, which always surprises people who think it's just a calm lake.
