how are crater lakes formed
crater lakes are pretty cool, honestly. i've seen a few from up high while traveling, and they usually form after a big volcanic eruption. basically, once a volcano blows its top, the magma chamber underneath empties out, which causes the mountain to collapse in on itself. this creates a massive bowl-shaped depression called a caldera.
over time, this hollowed-out spot just fills up with rainwater, melting snow, or groundwater. since there's no way for the water to really drain out, it just sits there and creates a lake. it's wild how nature just reshapes itself like that after such a violent event. some of them are super deep and have that really intense blue color because of the minerals, which always looks amazing when you're looking down at them.
