It's funny how people usually think there's a fixed number, but it really depends on how you define them. Most geologists agree on about 7 or 8 major plates, but once you start counting the smaller ones, the list gets pretty long. From what I’ve picked up over time, there are usually around 15 to 20 plates that people generally talk about in these discussions.

I've spent a lot of time out on the water, and honestly, the earth beneath the oceans is always moving in ways that make you realize how unstable things actually are. Those tectonic plates are constantly shifting, grinding, and diving under each other. Even if we pin a number on it today, the map of the earth's crust is basically a giant, slow-motion puzzle that never really stays put.
