what is the difference between active and extinct volcanoes
Acid rain in big cities usually comes down to all that exhaust from cars and the heavy traffic we deal with every single day. When you've got thousands of vehicles burning fuel constantly, they pump out nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide into the air. Honestly, being on the move as much as I am, you really notice how thick the smog can get in urban centers, and that stuff just hangs there until it mixes with the moisture in the clouds.
It's not just the cars though, because those older industrial zones and power plants sitting on the outskirts of the city add to the mess too. When that mix of gases reacts with water, oxygen, and other chemicals up there, it turns into sulfuric and nitric acid. Once it starts raining, that water isn't exactly pure anymore, and you can really see the damage it does to older buildings and stone statues over time. It's pretty rough when you think about how much we're changing the air quality just by living our daily lives.
Think of volcanoes like a sleeping giant versus one that's well and truly retired. Active volcanoes are the ones that are constantly letting off steam, spitting out lava, or just showing signs that they’re still cooking something up deep underground. I've sailed past a few spots in the Pacific where you can actually smell the sulfur in the air and see the smoke rising; those are the ones that keep you on your toes because they could decide to wake up properly at any moment.
Extinct volcanoes, on the other hand, are pretty much done for. They don't have any magma supply left to feed an eruption, so they're basically just big old mountains now. It’s funny how peaceful they look compared to the active ones. You can hike up some of these extinct craters and barely even realize you're standing on what used to be a terrifying fire-breather thousands of years ago. It's a massive difference in terms of risk, honestly, because one is a constant threat and the other is just a part of the landscape at this point.
