Absolute humidity is basically just the actual mass of water vapor in a specific volume of air, usually measured in grams per cubic meter. Think of it as the raw amount of moisture sitting in the atmosphere, regardless of how hot or cold it is outside. It tells you exactly how much water is there, but it doesn't really give you the full picture of how that air feels on your skin or how it affects the weather.

Relative humidity is what we usually hear about in the weather forecast, and it's expressed as a percentage. It shows how much moisture is in the air compared to the maximum amount the air could possibly hold at that specific temperature. The trick is that warmer air can hold way more water vapor than cold air. So, if the temperature drops at night, that same amount of moisture results in a higher relative humidity, which is why you often see fog or dew forming when things cool down.

I deal with this stuff all the time when I'm out on the water. When the relative humidity hits 100 percent, that’s when everything gets saturated and you start getting condensation everywhere. It’s the difference between just having water in the air and the air actually being unable to hold any more, which is when you start dealing with dampness, rust, and visibility issues.

Basically, absolute humidity tells you the mass, while relative humidity tells you the capacity. If you take a cubic meter of air and it holds 10g of water, but the max it could hold at that temperature is 20g, then your relative humidity is 50%. It's pretty straightforward once you stop overthinking the science behind it.
