It’s honestly one of those things you don't really think about until you're staring at a chart in the middle of the ocean trying to calibrate your navigation systems. Basically, back in the day, the British were the masters of the seas, and since they had the most reliable nautical charts and were already using the Royal Observatory in Greenwich as their baseline, it just became the global standard by default during an international conference in 1884. It wasn't really a scientific necessity as much as it was about who was running the show for mariners at the time.
I've spent plenty of time calculating coordinates, and it’s pretty wild to think that the whole world just agreed to pin zero degrees longitude on a spot in London. If the French or someone else had been the main navigators back then, that line would probably be running through Paris or somewhere else entirely. It’s just one of those historical quirks that stuck, and now we all just live by it to keep our bearings straight while traveling across the globe.

Honestly, it basically comes down to the british empire being the big power back in the day. since they had the most ships mapping out the oceans and charting trade routes, everyone was already using the charts made by the royal observatory in greenwich. when they held that big international conference way back in 1884 to standardize time, it just made sense to stick with what was already the standard for most navigators.
i've spent plenty of time checking charts and adjusting my watch while crossing different zones, and it’s pretty wild to think that it all pivots around one spot in london. if the french or someone else had been the main ones leading the naval game at that time, we’d probably be looking at a completely different zero-degree line today. it’s not really about some special geographic alignment, just pure convenience and historical influence that stuck around.
