Eutrophication is honestly such a headache for our local ecosystems. When all that extra nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers or waste gets into the water, it triggers these massive algae blooms. It looks like a thick, green carpet on the surface, which blocks sunlight from reaching the plants living deeper down. Once those bottom plants die off and start decomposing, the bacteria go into overdrive, sucking up all the dissolved oxygen in the water.
The real tragedy happens when the oxygen levels plummet, leading to what we call "dead zones." Fish and other aquatic life just can't survive in those conditions, so you end up with massive die-offs. I've seen lakes that used to be crystal clear turn into these murky, swampy spots where barely anything can live anymore. It totally messes up the whole food web, and honestly, it takes a really long time for a lake to recover from that kind of damage once the balance is ruined.
