People who were in prison, What unexpected acts of kindness did you witness?

Not prison but a few years ago I went to county jail for some bullshit charges, i was 16 and had just got out after 6 months. I'm sitting in the intake cell with about 12 other guy's. Bc i was on parole and charged as an adult i would be treated as one. There was a mixed man in there who had these cuts all over her about 1-2 in long and im like hey man what happened? Turns out the police pulled him over and he had warrants so he ran, ended up running thru a little creek bed in 40 45deg weather and ran thru some thornes, well the cops tackled him into a thorn bed and thats why he was all cut up. Well this cell was gross and cold and i knew I'd be getting moved back to a pod soon so i gave him my mattress and told him it wasnt right they gave him one, the dude w open cuts head to toe but gave some kid one. I got back to a pod a few hours later and the unit had heard about it and i guess they were some of his friend's, they gave me food and drinks bc i had no money.

I was eventually sent to prison during my incarceration but this act of kindness I remember happening in a pod at the county jail. The usual population that came through were drunks and addicts with an occasional more serious crime. A very scrawny guy with curly hair came in looking pale, frail, and starving. He immediately went to his bunk and started to sleep. He was left undisturbed for a couple of days so he could sleep, but other inmates noticed he wasn't eating and started to get concerned with him. They started waking him up for meals and coaching him to eat. The trays were scarce and this could have been an opportunity for others to prey on him but they did not.

County jail for me. My cell mate taught me how to roll a cigarette and gave me some tobacco and papers. I was out in 2 weeks and I tossed a few bucks in his commissary. He was a nice guy, just an angry drunk. Everyone just left me alone and let me sleep. It was honestly a nice break from the life I was leading. It made me realize that good people make mistakes all the time. Mostly everyone in there was nice. One guy drew loony toons style cartoons and did one of me hanging my head and feeling sorry for myself and he gave it to me. It really made me feel good to know somebody knew how I felt. They didn't let me keep it when I was let out sadly.

Father served 16 years I never heard him say anything kinda and his rap sheet kinda said he was the devil.

When i was locked up I worked in the kitchen I made the meals for people on suicide watch. Mealloaf etc.. Would wrap it in sandwich paper but I would write little inspirational quotes on the paper add extra cookies and stuff figured maybe that little thing could change someones outlook

My parents volunteer in prisons through our church, leading bible studies, giving talks on finance, careers, and family, and mostly just developing relationships with the prisoners. About once a month I get a call telling me about their old and new friends that they've made since they started volunteering. One of my dad's inmate friends is an incredible artist and paints and draws pictures for him. One picture he painted was of my mom and dad walking along a lake in the fall. Another has written poems and gifts them to my parents. It's not all the fights and nastiness that some shows and movies would lead you to believe

There isn't really kindness. People will give away shit when they leave but that's about it. Kindness will get you fucked up and extorted.
