People who were in prison, What unexpected acts of kindness did you witness?

I spent some time inside a few years back, and honestly, the things you see in there really change how you look at people. You'd expect it to be all cutthroat, but sometimes the guys with the toughest reputations were the ones who showed the most heart. I remember this one guy who had a life sentence, he used to save his tiny portions of butter or extra fruit from the cafeteria just to give them to the younger kids who were struggling to keep weight on. He didn't want anything in return, just seemed like he wanted to make sure someone else didn't go hungry.

Then there was this older dude who spent hours every night helping people learn to read or write letters to their families. A lot of guys in there are embarrassed about not knowing how to handle paperwork or write a decent letter home, and he’d sit there with them, super patient, never making them feel small for asking simple stuff. It sounds like such a small thing, but when you're locked up, being able to write a proper letter to your kid or mom is the only thing that keeps you sane. Seeing that kind of solidarity definitely sticks with you.
