"A friend of mine had spent the last year losing a lot of weight. One night, we were meeting up with some friends who hadn't seen him much, and they said that he seemed to be "Lightening" every time they saw him. He laughed, and said that they should count after the flash. They both looked shocked, and replied that they didn't want to see him naked. ...after a minute of confusion, we realized that he thought they meant Lightning (bolt of electricity) rather than "getting less heavy," and they thought he meant flash (show off your nudity) rather than "count after the flash to track how far away the bolt was." "

"I was sick and barfing, and I needed to empty my barf bowl. I was gonna empty it in the sink. Our sink has two sides: disposal (left) and normal drain (right). I was going over and my dad was like "Make sure to put it in the right side." That means the correct side, disposal, which I would put it in, but I heard him say right as in right hand side. I dumped it down the right-wrong side and then my dad had to clean it out because I was a little kid. "

"I grew up speaking German (Native English speaker, btw.) My family was Dutch. There was a word that involved "waffe" (force, or weapon, basically) that my uncle smacked my brother for saying. My brother clarified what he meant and then Uncle Robert stared at us blankly, apologized for over-reacting, and walked away. It's not well known, but over time, you tend to lose your understanding of a language when you don't speak it for so long. I'm still trying to learn what he thought my brother said.... ... The situation was much funnier at the time, though. "
