"When I brought my (3rd generation) Japanese-American fiancee home to meet my grandma for the first time I really wasn't expecting any drama. And Grandma was totally cool even though she'd lost her first husbaand to WWII Pacific fighting. (She remarried later.) But her older brother was also there, who spent a lifetime in the Navy and he quickly pulled me aside. "She sure is pretty for a Jap girl. I used to screw them all the time in the Nip whorehouses, and they even like it rough." I cut him slack. He served in WWII and Korea, retired with chronic pain and raging alcoholisim. He was actually a very nice guy, just had ZERO sense of social norms and politeness. What he thought he said and there was no filter in between. Refreshing if you can just ignore the rough edges. He passed away a decade ago and his funeral was PACKED with Vets that came from all over. He would have loved his wake, there was booze and swearing everywhere. "

"I used to work in a dementia ward. One unusually slow afternoon, I was painting this elderly woman's fingernails. This was something she loved and took great pleasure in. She never said much, and when she did it was one word answers and very quietly. Anyway, I'm just about to start painting and she leans in and says, clearly, "Have you got any grass? I could really use a wee puff". I said, "No. I don't, sorry." I broke down laughing after that and the pair of us had a great time giggling and having tea until I had to really get back to work. I was really bummed when she couldn't remember it later on. But, such is the nature of dementia. It's a bitch. "
