The way I see it, a large part of the enjoyment comes from the excitement of potentially finding something - think of it as being like buying a lottery ticket. You're about as likely to win that as you are to unearth a treasure trove, but the anticipation of winning is still there. On topic: I have a metal detector which was bought for me when I was younger and moving into a new house. The house is hundreds of years old, and on a site that has been home to all kinds of exciting activity over the past thousand years (there is still a moat in the grounds that used to protect an ancient priory before some Vikings burned it down). I have found all sorts of things, including what is unmistakably an enormous door hinge almost a metre long (presumably from the ancient priory) and the head of a Viking throwing axe.

My cousin has found women jewelry a few times. An earring, necklace, and lots of bottle caps.
My grandma found a $25,000 diamond ring once. She's too nice though and returned it to the police station. Damn grandma.....
I found some driftwood shaped like a penis once
Found an enormous chest of gold coins once. Was then yelled at by some lady, and the coins turned out to be chocolate. Huge disappointment.
I wasn't using a metal detector, but when I was little I was digging in the sand and found a $100 bill.
My stepdad likes to go metal detecting. He's found some pieces of jewelry, lots of old coins, nothing super spectacular. I think, for him, he's happy whether or not he stumbles across a treasure trove. He seems to like the adventure. It's cool seeing him search town for a place to go detecting, spend a few hours searching, and bringing his new stuff home and cleaning it in his rock tumbler. The technique is to really be creative with where you go detecting. For example, playgrounds are goldmines because lots of kids like to bring stuff to school to show their friends and end up losing it at recess. And places where old buildings used to be, like factories, are good too. Also. His brother has written two books on metal detecting :)
I was walking along the beach when I was younger (7/8) and I was walking a bit behind a man with a metal detector. He wasn't having much luck, I found a PS10 note he'd missed.
My uncle found a silver human tooth.
"I've been MD'ing on a fairly regular basis for about a year. The first thing I found and what I will always keep is a Bud-Light bottlecap. The "coolest" thing I found would be a really nice lure (I like to fish occasionally) and the most expensive would be probably the 10 odd dollars in change I've dug up since I started. I am just as happy digging up a pull tab as a quarter - it's all about the hunt. "
