Why doesn't 911 accept texts? Certainly this would help thousands of people in emergency situations who for various reasons are not in the position to communicate their distress vocally.

I haven't worked in a 911 call-centre, but I have picked up non-emergency ambulance cases before as part of my job. Being able to hear the state the caller is in (sobbing? distraught?) is invaluable as the ambulances I handle have a 30-minute turnaround, and is run by private operators, whereas the national emergency ambulances have one of ten minutes or less. The few seconds that I talk could make a difference. That being said (sorry, kind of irrelevant), the point I'm trying to put across is that texting, while having advantages, have some problems like those already mentioned by others. I'm sure those countries implementing such a... service have ways to getting around stuff like spam texts, and some times a person may not provide important information (location, condition?). I do support such an implementation, for the very reason that I got trapped in a lift once, with not enough reception to make a call, but could send a text.

Last I heard they do accept texts.

I've always wondered the same thing! I would be so much more convenient if they accepted texts. I mean, if you're hiding in a closet while someone is in your house looking for you, it's probably not safe to call up the police. Texting is completely silent so you don't have to risk being heard.

A simple hang-up call will suffice. If you call them, say nothing, and hang up, they are required to come over. Of course, if it is a cellphone, they won't know where you are. This is why land-lines are still necessary. People who have a cell and no land-line are fools.

"I'm a little late to answering this, but as a former E-911 trained operator, they do have procedures in place for "silent call" emergencies. The operators are trained to ask yes/no questions and prompt the caller to simply push the 1 or 2 key for responses. "

1) two way communication does not exist in a text. 2) need to ask questions of the caller to ascertain the issue. The emergency worker is trained to listen to the details of the call and translate this into an incident report which is sent out to appropriate networks. 3) abuse.

If I remember correctly, a couple localities are running pilot programs where you can text 911.

Because people would drunk text them with the emergency of being out of beer and all the stores are closed.
