Are the Dr.Dre Beats headphones that bad?

As everyone pretty much summarized above, yes, they're awful for everything but (muddled) bass response and cracking walnuts. Don't buy these if you want to hear things like vocals... and instruments... and mids... and highs. If you want great sound with a not so pretty shell, go sennheiser, klipsch, or akg. The hivemind consensus is pretty spot on. But if looks matter, take into consideration the House of Marley Exodus cans. They're gorgeous and borderline audiophile grade, have a great seal for an open phone, really nice mellow high end response, are made of reclaimed and/or renewable products. These are well rounded cans and a more sound choice if reference quality sound isn't crucial (which it isn't if you're looking at beats). Unfortunately, this is supposedly the only well received product in the line. They run about $150 USD. TL DR - Dre bad. Marley good.

I got them a few months ago, and I have been fully satisfied except for one potentially major factor: noise leakage. I like to listen to tracks loud, and my girlfriend can literally hear the song, lyrics and all, from across the room. it's pretty absurd. so that rules out me using them in the library unless they're extremely low. Really, if that's not a huge determining factor for you, there's nothing wrong with considering them, because sound quality is pretty top notch. But as others have said, there might be some similar options that are cheaper.
I have the originals and they are AWESOME
I bought a pair for the Monster ear buds, and they sound like shit, definitely have $20 skull candy headphone ear buds that sound so much better. You are paying for the metal and the name.
"All equipment that feels the need to advertise itself with celebrities is of poor quality until proven otherwise. This extends throughout pretty much anything. Friend of mine had a "fatal1ty" PSU. Blew in 4 months. I had an OCZ PSU. Took 6 years to go, including heavy transport. Get Sennheisers or AKGs. "
My fave is Shure. They've been kind to my ears and nobody can hear my music when I blast it
You have to ask yourself what you are buying your headphones for. Dr. Dre headphones are OK, but you have to understand that a big chunk of the price tag is for the design and name brand. If you are very design conscious and want to wear these as much as an accessory than a listening device, go with the Dre's. They sound nice and look good. If you want these just for pristine sound, go with any other headphones from a trusted audiophile brand and guaranteeing they will sound better (but not be as stylish). Dre's vs any other headphones is style vs function.
They're nigger items. Stay away
Yes, yes they are. You can polish a turd but it is what it is. I doubt that they're even made by audiophiles, more than likely what they've done is attach a name onto standard phones and charged double the price. Stay away
If you are getting them with your phone (Like the HTC Rezound) its not a bad set. Otherwise, like many posts on the thread, I would spend my money elsewhere.
