Why do many Americans have to wait in long lines for hours in front of their polling locations, when voting in most other western nations just takes a few minutes?

I've never had this issue personally, but I imagine it simply boils down to the fact that voting day is not a national holiday. So while people in other countries have the day off work to vote within a 12-16 hour timeframe, many Americans will get off work at, say 4pm and rush to the voting booth all at the same time, which leads to long lines. I typically vote early, which I don't understand why more people don't do that, because I can go in, fill out my ballot and submit it within 3-4 minutes. Perhaps other states don't allow that. The only thing holding me up typically is I'll take extra time to fully decipher the ridiculous wording on bill proposals so I make sure I make a careful but correct decision. TLDR: other nations give everyone the day off to go vote in America we all get off work at the same time and therefore crowd voting centers at the same time, leading to long lines even though the actual voting part takes a few minutes at most.
