Why would anyone want to take a pill to fix a minor problem when the array of side effects are stunning, like suicidal thoughts, sudden death, etc?

"Without going too much into the money/greed/incentives side of things. People want quick relief. Most people think that the side effects are so rare, that they couldn't possibly get them. How could a drug possibly be sold if it was dangerous? They couldn't do that! Combine that with the commercials that try to mask the side effects with pretty butterflies and happy music, then you've got a problem. So they trust the doctors, and take the pills. Most people get lucky and find some relief, but a lot of people only start to ask questions once they begin to feel the effects. Guys like Robin Williams, Tony Scott. The worse part, is that people take their own lives when on these antidepressants and people just assume "He was already depressed, he would've killed himself anyway." That's bullshit. Everybody that's depressed has moments when they feel like giving up and quitting. These drugs, make quitting seem like the right thing to do. "

Not that bi polar is minor, but I do this twice a day every day. Have been for 4 yrs. thoughts of suicide are better than actual attempts.
Everyone else's problems always seem like minor problems until they become your problem.
It probably only seems like a minor problem to you, because you aren't the one suffering from it
Small chance of the real bad side effect as opposed to the small problem that consistently bothers them, or could be a small problem causing long-term damage.
Context?
If he doesn't take that little pill that has a tiny chance of killing him, there is a very, very big chance that I will kill him. He's really moody without it.
Because these side effects are very rare. Also, what's a minor problem to you may be major to someone else. Last but not least, it's easier to take a pill than make major changes. I always tell my patients that if only they quit drinking so much or lost 20 lbs, they could be off up to THREE different blood pressure medications. Yet even despite the inconvenience and the cost of taking all these meds, they find it easier to do that rather than reduce their alcohol intake or lose 10% of their bodyweight.
What do you mean by minor problem? Headache pills and antacids don't really have side effects. If you are depressed (not so much of a minor problem), anti-depressants are a big help even if 1 out of every 50 people experience stomach bleeding and blood clots or something like that.
Sounds like a great Black Mirror episode.
