Gamers: What are some common misconceptions about videogames that non gamers (i.e. parents/teachers/grandparents) firmly believe in? If applicable, were you able to change their opinion?

It is self-evident to non-gamers that games played on a cellphone are a social experience, but games played on a PC or console are anti-social. That's because phones are devices you carry outside and use to talk to people. PCs and consoles are done immobile, at home, on a fixed screen. As I explained to my wife, the opposite is true. Mobile games typically involve focusing entirely on a little screen to the detriment of everyone around you, playing a very solitary experience. And you're more likely to play it in public where other people will feel actively ignored. PC and console games, however, generally have huge communities of players who interact all the time.

Maybe not a misconception, but I don't think my grandmother realized how toxic an online community could be, it wasn't until she was playing an online game with my younger cousins that she realized some people can be idiots/ a**holes
I think a lot of people don't really understand how much of a social hobby gaming can be both in game and out.
That they teach u nothing. My hand eye coordination goes absolutely crazy!!!!
Games aren't just for violence i play For Honor ALOT and the thrill of beating someone with real strategy predicting their moves and baiting them to do a move you want them to is just an amazing feeling
Put a pause on it!
That it's all just AK-47s going BANG BANG BANG RATATATATATA. I made my mother watch me play Silent Hill 2 and she was absolutely bamboozled.
"OP here with an example: In my case, I always listen to music from videogames. Any other music doesnt compare for me personally. My dad would always kind of give me a wierd look when I would mention that. When I had him listen to my favorite song (Road Less Taken from Persona Q2 on the 3DS) he said "wow this is actually really great music. I always thought the music you were listening to was like shitty old music" (referring to old 8 bit chiptunes). Now he asks me to show him more of my music sometimes. I made his view do a 180. "
""games are so boring" I play like every time I get home from school and my parents always say "let me guess, your bored?" My dad compares it to AFL on the tv. I finally convinced him like this. "AFL is just watching someone kick a dead cow. Gaming is playing it for yourself. You don't know what will happen and when something will happen. It is better to play it than watch it." Idk how that got him but now he has bought like $100 (Australian dollars) worth of games on steam. "
My friends who are mostly academics and serious professionals see gamers (i am) as mostly dumb people. They have a basis for this belief as most students who flunk are gamers. They don't study, don't prepare for exams, and of course don't submit assignments.
