Well, if you're on a tight budget, this is what I've got for you. First, if you can get your hands on one, find yourself a little sign that you can stick in the front of your yard that says you home is protected by 'so and so' security. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. It will give the appearance that you have a security system installed when you dont really have one if you cant afford one. Then there are these suckers that you can stick on a door or window. When contact is broken between the two sensors, a loud and high pitched alarm goes off. Don't let their size fool you. My mother has these on her doors and windows and good god they are so loud they can be hear around the damn neighborhood. there is also these that you can hook up to different light switches that will turn on different lights around your house to give the appearance that someone is home when they actually aren't. Stuff like this is probably your best bet if you're on a budget.

You ever see Home Alone? Not the 2nd, but the first one... with the house and the burglers and the burglin? Basically, that film is your finest resource for your home security needs.
Keep your money and valuables on the outside.
Don't let it look like you have anything of value and don't let people see inside your windows/place. Don't answer the door to strangers as many will case your house pretending to sell things. Make sure your entry door isn't a hollow core door. They break very easily and it's illegal to use them as entry doors but a lot of slumlords use them to be cheap. Use wooden dowels to jam windows closed after you shut them normally. Pets and having people home a lot.
Don't make it look like you have money. Fancy stuff outside your house? Wonder what you would put inside. Don't announce to Facebook or other social media when you are away from your home. Like going to the movies or vacation. Best to save that for when you get back. Make sure you have good secure locks in Windows and doors. Make a routine to check them before leaving. Dog or good loud security alarm. Don't pm random people your address.
I've heard a number of police officers state that owning a dog is the best home security you can have. Even a little yippy dog. Would-be burglars hear the barking, and know that it wakes you up. They move on to another house.
