Why can male artists get away with singing voices that are less melodious, but women generally cannot?

Whoa whoa, no one thinks Dylan or Tom Waits are beautiful singers. They have terrible voices. We accept them because they damn fucking good songwriters. Dylan is like a prophet to me. If I have a religion its Dylanism. I think this all subjective. Newsom's singing doesn't bother me, although she's clearly not a Beyonce or Houston. I suspect rock being so male oriented and being raised listening on rock has made you tolerate the male voice. The wonderful thing about rock is that its not like classical or even pop*, you can have a shit voice but if the band is a good or the writing is good, it doesn't matter. Look at the guy from the Hold Steady or even Bruce Springstein. *women singers tend to do pop a lot more rock. Pop is tons more melodic and demanding of vocalists. Rock females like Chrissy Hynde or Pat Benatar really don't have good voices. Pop females and males are expected to have good to great singing voices. tldr different expectations between rock and pop sing

Deeper, gruffer voices. Bruce Springsteen is my favourite artist by a long mile, but I wouldn't say he's good at singing. I love his singing, but by definition of hitting notes and having a smooth tone etc, nope.
Well, Bjork has made a career off of it.
I dunno, let ask Nikki Minaj .. oh wait
I think it depends on the type of music and vibe. I mean loom at Janis Joplin.
I don't really know if its acceptable for men on wide scale. Sure you have Dylan who sounds like a chain-smoking granny revolutionize folk but his music was rhythmic and his lyrics were poetic, it kind of made up for his grating voice. I would say Tom Waits is still very niche, he's been out there for decades and other than people who grew up with him and hispters know about him.
Tom Waits can because he can do whatever the fuck he wants. He actually has a very good voice if you listen to his older records, Closing Time is great. Some women can, Patti Smith and Kim Gordon come immediately to mind, but there are certainly more. But I think if it is easier for a male to pull it off its more about timbre. Artists like Dylan, Waits, or Lou Reed, while they may not be conventionally good singers, the texture of their voices complements their music.
cause we have a higher standard.
There are most certainly exceptions. I for one adore Ani DiFranco. Who, at times, sounds kind of like a coyote in a trash compactor.... in a really wonderful way.
different styles, different genres, different genders. anyway higher pitched voices and instruments tend to have a larger range while provide melody, while the bass is much more reserved, percussive and on a smaller scale.
