Honestly, if we're talking about the "classic" era, most people jump on the hate train for Fire Emblem Gaiden. I get why, though. The mechanics are super clunky compared to the rest of the series and the map design feels like a total slog sometimes. Trying to navigate those repetitive dungeons and dealing with the weird promotion system definitely tested my patience back when I first emulated it.
That said, I think calling it the absolute "worst" is a bit harsh because it was pretty experimental for its time. If you look at it from a pure gameplay perspective, it’s definitely rough around the edges, but it laid the groundwork for a lot of features we take for granted now. It's definitely not the one I’d recommend to someone just starting out, unless they’re really into retro gaming and don't mind a bit of jank.

honestly, fire emblem gaiden on the nes is probably the worst one if we're talking about the classics. i tried playing it a couple of times but the map design is just super repetitive and clunky compared to the later titles. moving units around those empty, boring fields gets old real fast, and the whole dungeon crawling mechanic feels way out of place for a strategy game like this.
i know some people have a soft spot for it because of the remake, but playing the original is a total chore. the hit rates and the way the inventory system works are just frustrating, and it lacks that polish that made the series stand out later on. if you're looking to dive into the older stuff, i'd say skip gaiden and just stick with the snes entries instead, they aged way better in my opinion.
