Honestly, just keep it simple and pay for your stuff. I remember back in the day, a guy in front of me at the market asked the cashier, "Hey, do these come in a pack of fifty? I've got a busy weekend ahead." You could literally see the cashier just freeze up and stare at him like he was some kind of alien. It's super cringey when people try to make a joke out of it or start bragging, nobody actually wants to hear that when they're just trying to scan items and move on.
Another classic awkward moment is when someone tries to make small talk while the cashier is struggling to find the price tag. Asking "So, are these any good?" is probably the worst thing you could possibly say. Like, what are they supposed to say, give you a review based on their personal life? Just put it on the counter, pay, and walk out. Everyone knows what you're there for, so there's no need to make it weird for everyone in the checkout line.
