Good cops, why is it so dangerous to arrest bad cops if the majority of you are good? What consequences are we asking you to face by crossing the blue line?

"The problem is that people assume because they've heard about high profile cases of cops doing terrible things and not getting fired that no cop that does a terrible thing gets fired. I work in a very large police department and have known several officers who were terminated, for a variety of reasons running the gamut from drug use to posting a video of a crackhead on their social media page. None of them made the paper though. There have also been several recent well publicized examples in NYC of cops being fired, such as the "cannibal cop", the cop who allegedly raped the drunk woman after helping her to her apartment and his partner and the lieutenant who tipped off cops involved in the ticket fixing scandal. No one is talking about these cases though because they don't fit the narrative. Basically, I believe that the percentage of truly bad cops is minuscule, and that the perception of cops is way out of whack with reality. "

"I wonder what it takes for a cop to consider themselves a bad cop. Misrepresent facts in a police report? Misrepresent facts on the witness stand? Arrest / hold someone, then release them "just to teach them a lesson"? How many "good" cops consider it acceptable to violate a citizen's rights while they do their job? Do they consider their job more important than the rights of the average citizen? "

The problem is that in a lot of places the majority of them aren't good cops. You can't just take every cop in the country put together and say most cops are good, because the truth is most departments are good, but some are rotten, and a rotten department is a lot more dangerous than one rotten cop.

Peer presure nothing more, you joined a brotherhood and dont want to be a outsider in a already select group. Its like a gang but one you get paid to join and you get a shiny badge.

I think even the best of cops have to make legal compromises based on moral judgement. That must really blur the lines, and when it comes to someone who blurs that same line in the wrong way, it's such a nebulous grey area, of course anyone would want to give the benefit of the doubt. I don't envy anyone having to make that delineation.

i can tell you as a LEO, that it is very easy to get away from the law. especially when you know what the law looks for. i.e. Dexter

There was a detective on my floor who started taking bribes from criminals. I was the one who had to hunt him down and arrest him. Motherfucker attacked me when I confronted him. We got him though. I honestly have no idea why so many cops have started going crazy.

I want to thank everyone for the rational discourse in this thread. As someone who has been very angry about this topic for years, it is nice to see that we are all just people trying to figure out how to deal with this issue together. I think this problem stems more from the folks who choose not to prosecute and cover up the problems than it does from the bad apples behaving badly. I am glad to see some officers acknowledge that the problem does exist instead of just hiding behind the self serving hero status that some wear on their ego. Denying the existence of this problem is only going to make it worse for themselves in the long run.

Its the burden of proof - just because certain communities come to a conclusion about certain incidents it doesnt make it so in the eyes of the law.
