Thomas Lane an J. Alexander Kueng, the two officers that helped hold down George Floyd, we're on their fourth, and third shifts as officers respectively, and we're being trained under Derek Chauvin. Should their penalties be lessened because of that? Why or why not?

"As we learned during the Nuremberg Trials "I was just following orders" is not a valid defense. Edit: jesus christ, to everyone deflecting saying nazi this and nazi that. Stop deflecting, saying "I was just following orders" isn't a valid defense to KNEELING ON SOMEONES BACK AS HE WAS MURDERED. Imagine if a regular guy did it, would you be crying for leniency for him? I doubt it. If you really want to go that route, how many junior nazi soldiers were charged for simply being associated with the nazi party? Not every nazi oversaw and carried out genocide, just being associated with the nazi party could be criminal, post WW2. Furthermore, if you really want to compare the 2, go ahead and Google how the U.S. is slowly turning into a fascist state, so the comparison could be fair, depending on your perspective. Justice for Floyd means just that. Giving a dude who ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED in his murder a lenient sentence for "just following orders" is NOT justice. "

"If i was in Lane's spot and my superior was killing someone. Yes! Pull him off of the man on the ground. Make up a reason, strait up shove him. Offer to take over the hold and do it right, "loose you balance" and knock him off. Come on. Cops are good at make up reasons to do shit. a job is not worth a life. Him not wanting to get scolded cost a man his life. Do i think he as guilty Chauvin no, but Lane and the others had the power to stop what happened. More so then the bystanders, more so then George. "

No. The move that Chauvin used is not standard training. They should have told him to stop.

No. They are police and their service is to protect. They failed and are complicit in a death If it were a civilian matter, one guy kills another while his two new friends stood there and let it happen, they would be held accountable and no one would be calling for there release.

You can see Thao has that weird look on his face, like the fact that something reeaally bad is happening right there dawns upon him, but all he can do is play dumb. Chauvin seems to be pulling rank, maybe he flexes his experience around them, and was eager for a situation like this to come up to show off. The only way the three guys can cover their asses is to turn against Chauvin. I'd do it. Throw him under the bus. He deserves it anyway. The guy is practically having an orgasm kneeling on Floyd's neck for almost ten minutes.

Likely... I mean, I couldn't imagine being on day 4 and pushing back on a boss... But I also have never stood idle while a boss murdered an innocent person... So...

I don't know much about Alexander Kueng but Lane's story is truly ironic given he used to teach Somali kids. I think he has the potential to become an excellent cop and should not be punished for his superior's mistakes especially when he spoke out twice against his actions -which is an extremely brave act in and of itself.

Based on Milgram experiment, Lane behaved as expected or more resistant than most. Do we fault him for being average, or punish him to make a point? Can we change society to A treat life as valuable and B not fall into a Milgram trap? And does Lane need punished to accomplish these goals?
