"I spent 3 months in jail. These are some helpful hints: 1) The Honey Bun is fucking CURRENCY. Buy them by the dozen from commissary. Treat them like twenty-dollar bills. 2) Do not, under any circumstances act gay. You will be propositioned hourly. 3) Get a job working in the jail. I did laundry and it was the only thing that got me through it. 4) Masturbation is not only encouraged, but a piece of toilet paper hanging on your cell door is the universal symbol for "slapping the salami, come back later". 5) Shitting is frowned upon, the courtesy flush is mandatory. 6) If you saw who started a fight, forget that you saw it, even if it causes trouble down the road nothing worse than a razor to the face. 7) If somebody asks you if you want to make a burrito, say "Yes" and go find some Fritos or a Slim Jim. You can thank me when you're a free man. 8) Buy stamps or stamped envelopes. Writing the outside world will keep you sane. "

I haven't been, but my brother has. There is a myth that pedophiles get beaten in prison - which they would IF they were not protected. Pedophiles are either completely segregated from the general population or there are extreme penalties for fighting a pedophile that does not exist for fighting say a drug dealer or a murderer. As a result pedophiles know they are untouchable and relish in it. The rest of the prisoners can only shun them sometimes at their own expense. Once my brother was going to take a class until a pedophile enrolled in it. The entire class dropped out rather than associate with the pedophile. It is true though that there is only one thing that unites the gangs in prison, and that is their shared hatred of pedophiles.
TIL Jail and prison are two different things... derp
"I've never been to jail but my brother has and says the racial groups are real, and a real problem too. He has "IRISH PRIDE" tattooed down the back of each arm (even tho he's only half Irish) because if you don't show allegiance somewhere, you're on your own. And you don't want to be on your own in prison. "
I've been a guard at a jail every summer since I graduated high school. Those guys care more about how their hair looks than you could possibly imagine. These guys would cut one another's hair every single day. I don't think that's a cliche, but it really should be. It was like a god damn hair salon except like every once in a while there would be a fight over packets of cheese.
I'm pretty sure you meant prison, which I cannot speak to. But, as for jail, it's super fucking boring. I don't think that's even a cliche rather than expected, but it's true. So fucking boring. edit: As other people have said, it totally depends on where you go. Basing this off Cook County & Milwaukee County jails. Also, boring doesn't mean it was a breeze either.
What a coincidence I went to jail yesterday and got released like 3 hours ago. Jail food sucks ass but something is better than nothing. If you happen to confuse jail with prison my cousin who was locked up in prison said that gangs are segregated and guards make sure there is little contact with them but fights still happen. He said that you shower at around 5 am, eat breakfast at 6 am, lunch at 12, and dinner at 5 pm.
It is NOT a myth that jails are full of drugs...I saw my first (and only) piece of crack in jail. It IS a myth that all criminals are evil and deserve to be punished...dont get me wrong there ARE evil people in there but there are also some really great people who made bad decisions and got caught - for example punching a teenager while said teen was trying to punch their daughter, driving without a seat belt, writing bad checks to try and get out of a hopeless situation... I don't know about American prisons, but the ones in Holland are more like hotels. You get a different (well-cooked) dinner every night, guards are very friendly (they do their job though) and drug addicts even get small portions of drugs to overcome their dependency. I think it's pretty much the same in most of the rest of Europe. Edit: They can also have their tv's and playstations with them if they behave well.
Like almost everyone here, neither have I. But Jeffrey Archer's Prison Diary was pretty enlightening and quite humble. It tells you about the double bubble. If you take a cigarette from an inmate, you have to give him 2 cigarette back. All favours work like that. And inmates with life sentences are not savage dogs, but tired polite people who've lost their will to live. Also, pedophiles and other molesters often get crime cover stories to protect them from getting beaten to bloody pulp. Minimum security prisons don't have boundary walls and inmates can run out if they want(which they almost never do). Here's the link to part one if someone wants to buy it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prison-Diary-1-Hell/dp/0330418599
